De-Escalating Tension and Restoring Reassurances across the Taiwan Strait

The NCAFP's Forum on Asia-Pacific Security (FAPS) held a Track II discussion on cross-Taiwan Strait security in New York City, the first in-person iteration of the dialogue since 2019. Scholars and experts from the U.S., Mainland China, and Taiwan assessed the next eighteen months to be a particularly sensitive period for cross-Strait relations, and how it is essential to prevent the already tense relationship across the Strait from getting worse. It was clear from the discussions that all sides believe tensions should be de-escalated, but the question is how to best do so.

Participants from all three sides agreed that there is too much focus on military actions and responses to perceived efforts to deter the other side(s), and not enough attention is being paid to reassurances.
