Cross-Taiwan Strait relations have been locked in a downward spiral, and the absence of dialogue between Beijing-Taipei and Beijing-Washington has led to substantial mistrust and miscommunication. As a result, neither side of the Strait is willing to making the first move in overcoming the political deadlock, and there is an urgent need for confidence-building measures to stabilize cross-Strait relations.
In the final months of 2020, the NCAFP assembled a group of prominent scholars and former officials from Taiwan, Mainland China and the US in another series of Track II video teleconferences. The same group met just before and after the US presidential election to assess the opportunities and challenges for cross-Strait dialogue amid COVID-19 recovery, economic issues, and political transitions.
