As three of the largest and most important economies and democracies in the world, the United States, Japan and Republic of Korea (ROK) can play an enormously important role in managing this period of uncertainty amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and working toward a common cooperative  future. However, trilateral coordination is at a historic low point as a result of several underlying trends: differing threat perceptions and policy approaches toward China and North Korea, the reemergence of history issues and strategic mistrust in bilateral ROK-Japan relations, and lingering anxiety over former President Donald Trump's attitudes toward the value of alliances.

In November 2020, the NCAFP brought together ten next-generation scholars and experts from the U.S., ROK and Japan to make policy recommendations for addressing common security challenges, economics, national security, and domestic politics and history. Please join us for the launch of a new report, Reinvesting in U.S.-Japan-Republic of Korea Strategic Relations: A Practical Trilateral Agenda, as members of the NCAFP Emerging Leaders Working Group share their perspectives and recommendations for charting a path forward for trilateral cooperation.
