Briefing on the NCAFP Trip to Asia

Susan Thornton addresses the NCAFP audience.

On December 3, the National Committee hosted a panel discussing the outcomes, findings and impressions from a delegation of experts recently returned from a number of major cities in East Asia.  Led by Ambassador Susan M. Elliott, President and CEO of the NCAFP, the delegation included Ambassador Raymond Burghardt, Ambassador James Zumwalt, Susan Thornton, Mark Tokola, Ryan Hass, and Rorry Daniels.  Ambassador Elliott, Ambassador Burghardt, Ms. Thornton, Mr. Tokola and Ms. Daniels addressed the New York audience.

During their visits to Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, Tokyo and Seoul, the delegation took a deep dive into the critical issues and priorities in the region, such as US-China relations, cross-Taiwan Strait relations, North Korea, and the future of US alliances.  They were able to share candid experiences from the trip, in addition to their fresh insights as they spoke not only of the state of play in each of the countries and cities they visited, but also on critical strategic questions that the United States and its regional partners and rivals must address.

Mark Tokola makes a point.

A full-length report on the findings from the trip is forthcoming.
